Abbeyfeale 12 – 27 Newcastle

It took the visitors along time to put this game away against a very determined home side played in ideal conditions in the grove last Sunday. Playing with the wind and down the hill in the first half Abbeyfeale were full value for their 12-3 lead. The visitors only reward in the first period was a penalty from Charlie O Doherty. It was an error strewn opening forty minutes which is probably best forgotten from the visitors perspective.

They came more in to the game in the second half and with Shane Airey taking full advantage of the wind they continuously pinned the home side back with long kicks. Captain Alan O Riordan had made the decision to chip away at the score board and four penalty kicks from the boot of O Doherty pushed NCW into the lead before James Kelly got a try which O Doherty converted. James Guina got on the end of a pass from Cian Mulcahy to get the last score and touch down under the posts. Emmett Wrenn got his first start at this level and was not found wanting at any stage of the game. Man of the match was Shane Airey.

I would ask all of our fans to make their way to Cullinagh next Sunday at 2.30 pm where the 1st XV entertain league leaders Bandon. This is a must win game if they are to keep their chances of winning the league alive. Bandon are three points ahead. So for local sports fans there is a busy few weeks. let’s get to Cullinagh and make your voice heard.

I would ask all our under age coaches to spread the word and let the future players see the present.
