Newcastle West RFC 26- 7 Crosshaven

We don’t get to many Saturday games but it was nice to be at home on a fine dry afternoon in Cullinagh last weekend. With a number of regular starters unavailable, it gave an opportunity for some of the younger players and veterans to put their hands up for places going forward. And put their hands up they did by securing a bonus point win and keep the pressure on the top teams in the league. It would be thirty two mins before the home side broke down the visitors and it was Daniel Normoyle (son of Donal) who would touch down at the corner flag at the town goal.  A super conversion by Shane Airey left the score at 7-0.The home side passed up on a number of opportunities to kick at goal and the were rewarded just before half-time when Cian Mulcahy (son of Tom) used his significant bulk to bash over the line.Shane added the conversion to leave the score 14-0 at the break.

Yellow cards were the order of the day and on two occasions in the second half the visitors were reduced to thirteen players due to injury and indiscretions. This lead to uncontested scrums which really don’t do anything for the game. A new player made his debut last Saturday and it was great to see David O Donovan (brother of Bobby) score a try on his first outing,he got on the end of a pass from Daniel Normoyle who had stretched high to receive a kick ahead by Shane and take the score to 21-0.

Bonus point was now on the horizon and it was Ballyclare hero Eoin O Halloran who got the home sides  last try and bring the score to 26-0 and secure a bonus point win. Crosshaven got a late try and the final score was 26-7.

The biggest cheer of the day went up when club legend Dave Foley ran forty metres up-field before offloading to Eoin O Halloran for his try.

U12s travelled to bruff on Sunday

U12s travelled to bruff on Sunday for a blitz against some strong teams from Thomond, Richmond and Bruff. Numbers were down due to sickness and other arrangements but the strength of our numbers showed well as we still had 16 players. 3 very good games were played with tough tackles from all our players and some six nations worthy tries being scored. Well done to all players and thanks to Bruff for hosting us 🏉🏉
